Wobbly Boot
Australians love their fur babies. More of us live in households with a dog or a cat than with a child. Tasmania has the highest incidence of pet-ownership. Some 44 percent of residents live with at least one dog. (RSPCA Tasmania, Speaking Up For Animals, 2024).
Wobbly Boot is Australia's 'most dog-friendly vineyard'. It's located at Campania, in the heart of the Coal River Valley. Paul and Lynda Williams purchased the vineyard from its founders Kevin and Wendy Schramm in 2014.
The 10ha property is bordered by White Kangaroo Rivulet. The irregular, boot-shaped landform created by the meandering watercourse gives the vineyard its whimsical name. The site features a mix of eucalypt woodland, native and introduced pastures, with a densely wooded riparian zone supporting diverse populations of wildlife.
North‑facing vineyard blocks sit on free‑draining, rocky duplex soils over sandstone and mudstone. These are typical of the valley and result in low to moderate yields of high quality wine grapes.
The Schramms established Wobbly Boot in 2002-2003 with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Within two years of their purchase, the Williamses undertook an expansion program – also adding Riesling – promptly doubling the original planted area.
Vineyard management incorporates organic, re-generative practices, with wildlife‑safe netting and minimal inputs intended to protect local flora and fauna. Low sulphites during winemaking allows the family's traditional method sparkling and table wines to be labelled 'vegan'.
Williams family custodianship has brought creation of dedicated dog zones including fully fenced, off‑leash areas. Wildlife conservation is not only promoted on the property, Wobbly Boot is registered with Land for Wildlife and actively supports the Wildlife Land Trust through its annual membership and organised events.
'Wine and Woofs' – held quarterly – raises very significant funds in support of animal welfare organisations and wildlife rescue.
Vineyard visitors are invited to join the Animal Lovers Wine Club to support these causes while enjoying boutique, vegan-friendly wines throughout the year.
Wine quality here has never gone to the dogs.
In January 2026, the 2022 Wobbly Boot Reserve Pinot Noir won a gold medal in its class. The wine was runner-up to the event's trophy winner for Best 2023 and older Pinot Noir.
