WELCOME

Welcome to Wine in Tasmania, a journal of discovery around Australia's wine island. Your trusted guide is Mark Smith, owner of wineintasmania.com, freelance writer and Tasmanian resident.

The indigenous name for Tasmania in the palawa kani language is Lutruwita. We acknowledge palawa people as traditional owners and custodians of Lutruwita. They share our journey.

Wine in Tasmania is a digital platform offering insights and well-informed comment on Tasmania's world-class, cool-climate wines.

If buying wine was your reason for landing here, there's bad news. This site does not sell wine.

Never has. Never will.

Mark Smith does not have a financial interest – either directly or indirectly – in a Tasmania vineyard, winery or wine distribution company. No money or gifts are sought or received in exchange for favourable mention of an industry, company, individual or wine by Wine in Tasmania.

This website's detailed, authoritative content includes individual profiles of 180+ licensed Tasmanian wine producers. Every one researched and written by a human author. The profiles are grouped according to vineyard or winery location and include site specific climate data.

The VISIT section is entirely devoted them.  Almost 100,000 words.

NEWS tells stories about the wine industry today and how it is evolving.

PAST is an archival section, with a drop-down menu providing access to articles written (by me) and published 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago. Vintage reports are also located there.

REVIEWS gives some back story to Tasmanian wines that will give drinking pleasure at the moment. These include carefully cellared bottles of back vintages.

Wine in Tasmania does not accept or offer advertising or product placement. The submission of wine samples is no guarantee of a published review here or in any other digital or print media.

Introducing Mark Smith

I am a freelance writer with a body of work comprising more than 2000 magazine and newspaper features covering the Tasmanian wine industry since 1994.

Yes, I really am that old!

Publishers and mastheads include The Advocate; The Examiner; Sunday Examiner; Tasmanian Farmer; In Business Tasmania; TASMANIA 40º South; TasmanianTimes.com; VisitVineyards.com; RieslingReport.com and Winestate.

I am a regular and current  contributor to Winetitles Media publications. I began with the South Australian-based company in 2002. My work features local, national and international content. Mastheads include Australian and New Zealand Wine Industry Journal, Australian Viticulture, and Australian and New Zealand Grapegrower and Winemaker.

I've written vineyard newsletters, EDM marketing collateral and all manner of tasting notes and media releases for Tasmanian wine producers over the years, including Domaine A, Stefano Lubiana Wines, Pipers Brook Vineyard and Riversdale Estate.

I've organised and conducted more wine events and tutored tastings of Tasmanian wines than I can remember. Regular gigs have included guest sessions at Hobart's Taste of Tasmania, TasTAFE and Adult Education Tasmania. Not to mention tutored tastings for passenger groups from P&O/South Pacific Tours as well as cellar door pours at Dalrymple Vineyard, Stefano Lubiana Wines, Pooley Wines, and Riversdale Estate.

As inaugural Chief Steward of the Tasmanian Wine Show (1991-1997), I worked alongside the legendary Phil Laing to plan and manage the formative years of one of Australia's most highly-regarded regional wine shows. Our chair of judges was renowned author and critic James Halliday.

In the early 2000s, I was the author of the Tasmanian Department of Primary Industry's annual vintage report.

For an incredible seven days in October 2006, I was an international wine media guest of the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne. The CIVC is based in Epernay and is the world's most prestigious trade and wine education body, serving the interests of 16,000 growers, co-operatives and Champagne houses.

From 2010-2013, I worked with Steve and Monique as the marketer and communications person for Stefano Lubiana Wines. Best job ever.

I was born and raised in Tasmania, and live in Hobart with my wife Lee and our family.

With grateful thanks to all that have shared good glasses and generous conversation.
