Sen Vineyard

If Fawlty Towers provided the archetypal model for how not to operate small, private accommodation, then Sen Vineyard at White Hills outside Launceston offers a polar opposite. "I asked for a room with a view!" will not be heard anywhere near this calm, statuesque site of 21st century living.

When Balram 'Samir' Sen arrived in Tasmania from Fiji in 1995, he was entranced by its landscape, its small-scale agriculture and its creative arts and crafts. He soon discovered a place that reflected the warm spirit of its island people.

One year short of three decades later, the industry-leading marine engineer began welcoming guests to a hilltop haven that showcases every one of those special Tasmanian qualities.

It's appropriately called The Cloud.

Sen lives twin lives. He remains a marine engineer – at Woodside Energy – yet somehow has also managed to find the time and wherewithal to create a luxury, cutting edge, home-away-from home. It's just 15 minutes from the Launceston CBD. Only passing aircraft get better views of the landscape.

The surrounding 22ha property hosts 2.5ha of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. There's also a small number of beef cattle on Sen's Kanhaika Farm.

Vines sit comfortably in the landscape. The vineyard was established in 2018. Sen began with quality planting material and the best of viticultural advice and expertise from industry veteran Bruce McCormack.

Deep, nutrient-rich soils of Jurassic and Tertiary origins offer a neat balance of good drainage and moisture retention. Growing conditions in the North Esk Valley are much drier and warmer – almost continental – when compared with the West Tamar and East Tamar. Very cool, late-season mornings are often accompanied by 'White Hills mist.'

Initial harvests were handled in conjunction with Craigie Knowe Vineyard at Cranbrook, on the East Coast. Nowadays, contract winemaking is carried out at Frogmore Creek Wines by award-winning winemaker Alain Rousseau.

There's still room for additional vines. But not yet, Sen says. Right now, he loves to prune every vine himself. It's more therapy and midwinter meditation than work.

Sen's self-contained three-bedroom luxury retreat can accommodate a maximum of six guests. Few event and wedding venues this close to Launceston can offer such privacy while enjoying expansive hilltop vistas of bucolic country living.

Tasmanian viticulture takes place within a diverse mix of soil types and microclimates.

Growing conditions in the Tamar Valley fall under the moderating influence of the river itself. Consider: Eversley Vines (MJT 17.7°C; 1065 GDD) and Evenfall (MJT 18.4°C; 1230 GDD). Coolest vs warmest sites.

Vineyard sites on the Australian mainland are far warmer than those in Tasmania.

South Australia's Piccadilly Valley* (MJT 20.4°C; 1730 GDD) and Macedon Ranges* (MJT 19.9°C; 1365 GDD) in Victoria are regarded as the coolest GIs in their respective states.
