2025 Premaydena Hill The Baroness $47

Under Ella and Daniel Kelleher's ownership, Premaydena Hill on the Tasman Peninsula has evolved from a traditional farming enterprise - based around 100 black Angus cattle - to a skilfully managed tourism destination with a high degree of vertical integration in its on-farm operations. This current release white blend is grown, made and sold exclusively on the property.
And what a property it is. Visitors to the cellar door and winery can enjoy panoramic views that can't be found anywhere else. Look north-east and you spot Maria Island in the distance. Look south-west and it seems Bruny Island is almost at the back door.
Combining the best characteristics of Pinot Gris and Chardonnay into a single wine is not something you see every day of the week, but it really works very well indeed in this smart release from the excellent, high quality 2025 vintage.
The Premaydena Hill vineyard is entirely dry-grown. It's been that way since day-one. The Kellehers are keen to produce wines that truly reflect the natural environment and the seasons in which they're raised. Vines are not force-fed through on-site fertigation. Bunches are not made fat and juicy with water from the farm dam. It's all about maximum flavour with minimum intervention.
This 2025 wine delivers a finely-tuned mix of ripe pear/white nectarine varietal character that flows neatly across the palate and finishes with very convincing, well-sustained length of flavour. The property's Pinot Gris on its own is a very punchy drop. Indeed, I find it one of a very rare breed that is almost too rich and potent for its own good.
Blending it with a good dollop of Chardonnay introduces some welcome refinement and elegance, something that makes it very satisfying and consumer-friendly. Some may find it a bit understated at first but its capacity to partner good food is almost limitless.
Daniel Kelleher has no formal winemaking qualifications per se but wines like The Baroness suggest he's a fast learner.
