2024 Moores Hill Pinot Noir $45

With around 20 vintages of Moores Hill Pinot Noir now under its belt, it's surprising that this small Tamar Valley vineyard still seems to travel under the radar when it comes to Tasmania's flagship red variety. That's a pity. These wines deserve closer attention from lovers of elegant, cool climate Pinot Noir. Recent releases have been especially noteworthy, and this new kid on the block from the outstanding 2024 vintage offers plenty of style and substance for your $45.
James Oliver and Constance Olivier took on ownership of their 25-year-old Moores Hill Estate in July 2022. It seems every waking moment since then has been spent on product improvement, from introducing preferred clonal selections and re-jigging vineyard pruning regimes to tweaking on-site winemaking.
This is a lovely, expressive young Pinot - simply delicious to open and share now, but also one that's been skilfully crafted as a medium-term cellar dweller. Despite the warmth of the season, the wine remains fresh and vibrant on the palate, with ripe fruit flavours neatly tucked away within the bounds of the red fruits/red cherries flavour spectrum. Tamar Valley Pinot Noir can sometimes be plummy and hefty, but this 2024 release most certainly avoids that trap. Oak maturation has been very well-handled, allowing the wine to finish with lingering natural acidity and a hint of cherry-pip, fine-grained fruit tannin.
Oliver and Olivier also produced a statuesque and impressive Reserve wine in 2024, but for sheer pizazz and drinkability at the moment, the entry-level label wins my head and my heart.
