2024 Kate Hill Riesling $39

Kate Hill launched her small eponymous ('self-branded') wine company in the best possible way, by winning a gold medal and People's Choice Trophy at the 2009 Tasmanian Wine Show with her 2008 Riesling. The quiet and unassuming Huon Valley winemaker has always proved to be force to be reckoned with when it comes to the much under-rated variety in Tasmania. Yes, Hill has made some fabulous Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs over the years, but it's tasting her latest Riesling that always piques my interest. This 2024 vintage deserves a place among Kate Hill's most successful wines. It's a delight.
The wine has great line and length, something more often written in relation to Test cricket but it applies here too. There's a laser-like focus to this Riesling that can only be derived from cool climate origins - in this case, from the Derwent and Coal River valleys in southern Tasmania. The colour is the palest of pale greens, with citrus and white flower fragrances telegraphing the variety in an instant. A hint of green apple provides an edge to the lemon/lime fruit, the finish being fresh, vibrant and long. Delicious.
Drink or cellar for as long as you can keep your hands off it.
