2024 Home Hill Pinot Noir Landslide $38

06/08/2026

Home Hill – at Ranelagh, in the picturesque Huon Valley – was a thriving apple orchard until the 1960s. But when the European Common Market came into being midway through the decade, the bottom fell out of the apple industry all over Tasmania.

Orchardist Terry Bennett grubbed his trees to graze cattle. But that wasn't so profitable either. Third time lucky, he and his wife Rosemary planted six rows of Pinot Noir in 1992 to try their hand grape-growing.

Today, the family's 10ha vineyard is home to a thriving cellar door/function centre, with an excellent on-site restaurant. Home Hill's range of single vineyard wines have been prolific award winners over the years, with Pinot Noir leading the way.

The portfolio comprises three tiers, with Kelly's Reserve at the top figuring among Australia's best when vintage conditions permit. The 2014 won the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show in 2015. The mid-range Estate frequently challenges its Reserve sibling in the quality stakes.

Landslide comes from the property's youngest vines. The name references a landslip that occurred on the Ranelagh site some 30-odd years ago.

The 2024 is a generous, well-crafted Pinot Noir that offers tremendous value-for-money. It's ideally suited to current drinking, though there's genuine depth and intensity in that buoyant fruit, suggesting it will handle at least 5-8 years in the cellar if you have a preference for Pinots with a bit of complexity to them.

Cranberry, black cherry/dark berry fruit are in the driver's seat. Some meaty/undergrowth notes add interest to the palate, while the valley's characteristic fine natural acidity propels the wine across the palate with a fair bit of velocity. The tannins are certainly ripe and supportive but come at the expense of some alcoholic warmth.

Full-flavoured meat dishes are the way to go with this Landslide. The 2023 Estate will sit very neatly alongside Peking Duck done well.
