2024 Freycinet Riesling $36

No doubt about it, Freycinet Vineyard on Tasmania's sunny East Coast makes crackerjack Rieslings. Claudio Radenti and Lindy Bull first started making them as straight varietal wines from 1998, the previous vintages having been white blends created with a dollop of Müller-Thurgau. Prior to returning home in 1992, the pair had worked in WA's Great Southern, one of the country's most under-rated wine regions, and home to many top-flight Riesling producers.
Freycinet's new releases are always a joy to behold. This Riesling from 2024 has been in the bottle for a little over 12 months now and really shows its class. It's a lovely, fresh, vibrant aromatic, with subtle white flower fragrance to enhance its varietal lemon and lime fruit notes.
The palate is crisp and clearly defined, with delicious citrussy flavours that are dry, beautifully intense and very well balanced. Experience shows these wines develop gracefully with extended cellaring in a cool dark place. Of course, East Coast Riesling comes into its own when poured to accompany freshly-shucked oysters from leases found tucked away in these parts.
See for yourself during late October's Great Eastern Wine Week.
