2023 Kate Hill Four Winds Estate Chardonnay $45

Four Winds Vineyard and its cosy cellar door are just north of Huonville in the picturesque Huon Valley. Mild summers and chilly mornings late in the season provide great growing conditions for topnotch Tasmanian Chardonnay.

Deft making from Kate Hill has given this release a very attractive and engaging European feel. It's sleek and smooth-textured, with a fine balance of nectarine-like flavour, cool climate acidity and regional minerality. Around 10 months' maturation in a carefully selected mix of French oak/cooperages offers a neat counterpoint to the elegantly structured estate-grown fruit. It's delicious already, but if you have a hankering for interesting Euro-style Chardonnay with a bit of complexity, hang on to a bottle or two for the next 4-6 years. The wine unfolds like a flower bud when it gets a bit of air in the glass.
