2023 Dalrymple Vineyards Pinot Noir $42

06/22/2025

Dalrymple Vineyards founder Bertel Sundstrup spent a decade growing and making Pinot Noir in the Pipers River region before ownership of the property passed into the hands of Hill-Smith Family Estates in 2007. The good doctor - along with fellow founders Jill Mitchell and Anne Sundstrup - would be immensely proud of the great work being done there nowadays by vigneron Peter Caldwell.

On pouring, the wine looks fabulous in the glass; all bright and luminous. The aromatics here are typically Pipers River, with some Coal River Valley and upper Derwent components lending a hand in the blend. Red/black cherry fruit notes are accompanied some engaging floral elements. The wine is slippery smooth on the palate - barely mid-weight - but has intensity and length of flavour. There's a lovely glossy/polished quality, too, in part derived from sensitive use of oak. Of course, it wouldn't be Dalrymple without the vibrancy of fine natural Tasmanian acidity to draw the wine to an elegant and satisfying conclusion. Table-ready but should keep well in a cool cellar for 3-5 years.
