2022 Boomer Creek Sparkling Joy $48

The Walters family planted vines at Boomer Creek between Triabunna and Swansea in 2012 and 2013. The carefully managed 5ha site supports the use of natural solutions in controlling pests and diseases, and oversees a minimal intervention approach to winemaking undertaken at Spring Vale nearby.
You get what it says on the wine's label. There is indeed a good deal of joy to be found here, though in truth the wine takes its name from family matriarch Joy Walters.
Boomer Creek figures among a handful of Tasmanian producers that have chosen to take advantage of Riesling's versatility to create traditional method sparkling. This release comes from a vintage cooler than average on the coast, and with a little more rainfall than normal.
That helps explain the wine's freshness and vibrancy in the glass. The fruit was clearly ripe at harvest. The wine weighs in at 13 percent alcohol and has good depth and length of flavour for a dry sparkling style. For those reasons, it can be poured as an aperitif to enjoy on its own, or given the company of interesting savoury delicacies or starter courses.
Made with hand-harvested fruit (all Riesling), the wine was brought to life via traditional method. It spent 16 months on lees prior to disgorging. At four years of age, the wine still retains its youthful straw green hue. There's no sign of those characteristic petrolly/terpene aromas that gradually develop as Riesling ages. It hits the glass with a vigorous mousse and proceeds to deliver its joy with green apple, citrus and subtle toasted almond flavours. Subtle pastry notes telegraph that time on lees.
It will be interesting to see how this wine develops over time. It's at its best now but there's no hurry to drink the handful of bottles you'll want to take away from the bright and attractive vineyard cellar door.
